Notably, this extraordinary route is meticulously designed for global travelers seeking to explore the adventurous Makalu Base Camp, combined with the thrilling Sherpani Col and Amphu Lapcha Pass.
1 DayArrival in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,429 feet), 7 hours.Upon arrival in Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. All aspects of trek gear and conditions are discussed to make sure you’re fully prepared, and any last-minute questions answer. In the afternoon around 4 pm, A professional guide Ammar Guni takes you to explore the heritage sites of Kathmandu’s old Kathmandu durbar square, and Asan tole – the oldest Markets in Nepal.
We begin our journey with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to the Tumlingtar airstrip, situated at an altitude of 1,504 feet above sea level. As the gateway to the captivating Makalu Trek, Tumlingtar marks the starting point of our adventure. After organizing all the necessary arrangements, we embark on an exciting 4-5 hour off-road drive in a local jeep to reach the picturesque Num village. The journey through rugged terrain offers a glimpse into the remote beauty of the region. Upon arrival at Num, we settle in for the night, staying in a cozy tented camp to prepare for the trek ahead.
We begin our trek to Lumbang, passing through lush cornfields that set the stage for an adventurous day. From here, the trail descends sharply through dense jungle terrain, eventually leading us to the Arun River Bridge at 660 meters. Crossing the bridge, we make a steep ascent to a humble tea shop, offering a brief yet welcome respite. Continuing onward, we traverse fields of corn and buckwheat before following a rocky path that winds through tiny terraces planted with corn and barley. Finally, after a long, challenging climb, we arrive at Sedua, perched at 1,460 meters, where we will spend the night in preparation for the next leg of our journey.
Walk to Kasuwa Khola to Gyang (1,770m) through fertile fields and forested areas to Hindrungma village, and on to Rupisa. During the trail, we cross meadows and several streams and then climb to the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaun, the last permanent settlement in the valley.
Begin our trek to the scenic Chipla Ridge, gradually making our way upwards. Along the route, we cross two small streams before navigating a series of switchbacks through lush forests, eventually arriving at a Kharka at 2,900 meters. From there, the trail ascends to a saddle and reaches Unshisha, a tiny meadow situated at approximately 3,300 meters. At this point, the trail merges with the ridge that divides the Iswa and Kasuwa drainages, offering breathtaking views. Continuing onward, we traverse the Dhara Kharka Ridge before descending to reach our destination, Kauma, perched at an altitude of 3,470 meters.
Begins with a steep ascent through vibrant rhododendron forests, ultimately reaching the top of the ridge adorned with a prominent Mani wall. It unveils stunning views of Chamlang, Peak 6, and Peak 7, providing a truly breathtaking experience. From the ridge, we descend towards a peaceful lake, follow to climb through large boulders to the Tutu La pass. Around 150-meter descent after, we finally arrive at Mumbuk to settle in for the night.
We begin our journey by walking through enchanting birch and rhododendron forests, eventually reaching the serene Yangle Kharka. From there, we ascend further, crossing the picturesque Barun Khola to arrive at Nhe Kharka, situated at an elevation of 3,000 meters. Adding to the charm of this location is a small gompa perched on the southern side of the valley provides a breathtaking panorama of high mountains.
Beyond the Nhe Kharka, we follow at Barun river north bank. Barun Valley makes a huge S-shaped curve and the walls rise almost vertically about 6,560 feet above the river, but the trail climbs gently as we approach Ripok Kharka. Still, on the north side of the Barun, the trail turns westward and leaves the rhododendron forests for the alpine tundra. Above Ripok Kharka, the route crosses a rocky crest with a few goths and then ascends alongside a Barun glacier moraine. There are excellent views of Pyramid Peak, Peak 4, Chamlang, Peak 3, and Peak 5, but Makalu is not yet visible.
We gradually descend downhill, navigating a minor pass located just above the iconic Makalu Base Camp. Continuing the descent, we cross a stream on boulders, reaching the base camp situated on the west bank of the river. From this vantage point, the breathtaking south face of Makalu unveils itself in all its glory. This massive buttress of the south face stands impressively across from the base camp. Furthermore, during the ascent, the majestic peaks of Peak 6, Peak 7, and Baruntse (7,220m) come into view, while the panorama is magnificently completed with the sight of Everest and Lhotse in the distance.
