Helambu Gosaikunda trek itinerary detail
Travelers begin their journey after an hour’s drive to Sundarijal Hydropower station. The pilgrimage route to the Gosaikunda trail goes directly forward passing beautiful small settlements like Chisapani, Kutumsang, Mangan Gote, Thadepati Hill, and Suryakunda Pass.

01 Day Arrival at Kathmandu valley. The Chisapani area trek or tour starts from Sundarijal Bazaar, home to a small dam and hydroelectric station in the northeast corner of the Kathmandu Valley. The trek begins with a climb through wet, subtropical forests, transitioning to oak forests as you reach Mulkharka, a scattered Tamang village.
Continues the path ascending through oak forests to Borlung Bhanjyang pass, followed by a descent to Chisapani village. Chisapani offers stunning panoramic views of the Jugal mountain range, including Langtang and Ganesh to the east, and Manaslu and Annapurna to the west. Overnight accommodation is at a guesthouse.
The trek to Kutumsang continues from Chisapani along a descending trail that crosses meadows and fields, reaching Patibhanjyang, situated at 5,805 feet. This village, primarily inhabited by Brahmins and Chhetris, is bustling with shops and lodges.
From Patibhanjyang, the wilderness trail heads north along a forested ridge, after descends to a large chorten and the Tamang village of Gul Bhanjyang. The route then ascends the ridgeline to another pass at 2,620 meters, offering views back over Gul Bhanjyang. The trail descends further to Kutumsang at 2,470 meters, where you will stay overnight.
The forest trail ascends steeply above Kutumsang along an eroded path, winding through fir and rhododendron woods devoid of permanent settlements. Continues to walk to Magen Goth (3,150 m) and ultimately reaches Thadepati Hill. Thadepati Hill offers breathtaking Himalayan views, including nearly the entire Langtang range.
We hike along a gentle trail with varied terrain, passing through grassy lands, small forests, flower-strewn meadows, and crossing streams. Later lunch at Ghopte Lodge, the route passes ascends through sparse forest, traversing in and out of ravines at the head of the valley beneath towering cliffs. With only two lodges available, we select one for our overnight stay.
It’s a tough hike today comparing other days hikes ascending to Suryakunda Hill Station at 15,125 feet, traversing rocky moraines and rough hill paths.
Lauribina La is an adventurous hill station that offers an excellent views of Rolwaling, Jugal Himal, Gang Chhenpo (6,388 m), Langshisha (6,427 m), and many other snow-covering mountains. Upon reaching the summit of Suryakunda Lake, tourists can gradually descend along the rocky moraine trail, passing several pristine lakes on both sides.
According to legend, Gosaikunda was created by Lord Shiva when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after swallowing poison that threatened to destroy the world. There are 108 glacier lakes, all named after Lord Shiva. The main highlights include Saraswati Kunda, Bhairab Kunda, Bardha Kunda, Nag Kunda, and Gosain Kunda.
Gosaikunda Lake is a sacred site where devotees gather in August to pay homage to Lord Shiva. Therefore, a significant fair, “Janai Purnima,” is held here during the full moon, attracting pilgrims from far and wide.
The initial descent of the trail offers breathtaking final views of the majestic Langtang mountains. Near the Buddha Mandir viewpoint, you can enjoy stunning vistas of the Langtang Himalayan range, including Himal Chuli (7,893m), Manaslu (8,156m), and Ganesh Himal (7,406m). The muddy path through Cholangpati winds through pine, silver oak, and rhododendron forests, featuring marijuana plants, and leads to a suspension bridge over the Sing Gompa Stream. From there, the trail passes through several human settlements before reaching Dhunche Bazaar, the headquarters of the Rasuwa district.
On the final day of the trek, enjoy breakfast before joining your guide to catch a coach from the Kerung border to Kathmandu Valley. This is a popular and busy route, especially for those exploring Kailash tours.
